In a nutshell: Tiger Woods had a set of rules to keep a 68.17 per round average at his peak.
Tiger Woods revealed to Scott Fawcett, the founder of the Decade Golf System, his 5 scoring rules.
Make par on par-5s
This means not taking needless risk off the tee in trying to reach the green in two. Even with a 3 wood off the tee, most players would at least have some type of scoring club (9 iron and below) for their 3rd shot. If you have a half decent swing, its tough not to hit your approach somewhere on the green.
No double bogeys
It takes one birdie to offset a bogey and two to offset a double. A lot of doubles can be eliminated by simply playing for bogey if your tee shot or approach shot gets into trouble. You already made a mistake, take your medicine. Occasionally, you will make those huge par saves.
No 3-putts
This is a loaded statement. Some 3 putts are made due to poor putting skills like read, aim, stroke and distance control.
Some 3 putts are made due to proximity.
Most players have no idea how far they really hit their irons, the impact of wind on their shots and often end up on the green but way short of the hole. Check out the below from tour coach, James Jankowski. No bogeys with scoring clubs
Shorter clubs translates into a steeper swing plane that has less impact on the starting direction or the horizontal swing plane. All things being equal, this makes hitting the target theoretically easier.
Where players get tripped up here are the lies of the shot and the impact of wind. Shorter clubs have more loft which cause the face to point more left when the handle is lower (ball above feet) and when the handle is higher (ball below feet).
This is known as face-plane tilt.
Just remember to aim the center of the face as opposed to the leading edge toward your desired starting line.Oh yes, being Captain Obvious here, but solid contact is a must.
Don’t blow the easy saves.
If you have read till here, you must have some idea of golf strategy and are hopefully leaving your misses on the long side. Being workmanlike and choosing the high probability but boring chip-putt will ensure you do not miss your fair share of pars. Leave the low spinner wedge shot for when you have no other choice.
